Make every day a good skin day

Look Sun-Kissed
"A little tint takes years off your face by evening out your skin tone," which a recent study found is a key marker of youthfulness, says Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a dermatologist in Cambridge, MA. Her favorite for a natural look: Olay Complete Touch of Sun Daily UV Moisturizer + A Touch of Sunless Tanner ($15; drugstores), a lotion with a low level of self-tanner.

Eat a Skin-Saving Breakfast
The first meal of the day for New York City derm Doris Day, M.D., includes almonds. "They contain essential fatty acids, which help put the brakes on inflammation that accelerates fine lines, sagging, and blotchiness." Not feeling like a nut? Salmon, tuna, and halibut are good lunch/dinner sources.

Spray Away Dryness
To keep her skin supple, LA-based derm Jessica Wu, M.D., sprays it several times daily with La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water ($8.50; drugstores). (She often spritzes her face when stuck in traffic!) Bonus: The water is packed with minerals like selenium that protect against UV damage.

Pour On the Protection
To ensure she layers on enough sunscreen ("the best way to keep skin youthful"), Garland, TX-based dermatologist Lisa Garner, M.D., president of the Women's Dermatologic Society, fills the hollow of her palm (about ½ teaspoon) with a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to coat her face, neck, and ears. "I usually have to apply two coats to finish what I've squeezed out, but that's how I make sure I'm covered."

Zen Your Skin
If anyone has stress, it's doctors. High levels of tension can spike hormone production that leads to breakouts or aggravates conditions like psoriasis. "Controlling stress keeps your skin calm—but that's easier said than done," says Annie Chiu, M.D., a derm in LA. Taking a 10-minute time-out to apply a face mask and relax on her bed works for Chiu. Another trick: Ban the 'Berry. "I turn off my cell phone after 8 at night. Every little bit helps!" she says.

Protect with Powder
Sunscreen stops working in less than 3 hours, so reapplication is key, says Washington, DC-based derm Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D. For easy touch-ups, she uses powder sunscreen. "It's light, so makeup stays intact." Her fave: Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Powder SPF 50 ($60; colorescience.com).

Develop a Bedside Manner
"I often find it difficult to stick to my anti-aging regimen at bedtime," says Francesca Fusco, M.D., an NYC derm. To avoid missing her evening routine, she stores these products in a pretty makeup case she keeps on her nightstand. "So if I've forgotten—or was just too tired to apply products at the sink—I can do it easily while in bed." Her must-haves: Renova (an Rx retinoid), EpiCeram (an ultrahydrating Rx moisturizer), SCO lip balm, Earth to Skin Care Cracked Heel Renewal, Creative Nail Design Solar oil (to soften cuticles), and Listerine White Strips.

Wear Your Veggies
Frozen peas help soothe itchy, irritated eyes for Jeanine Downie, M.D., a derm in Montclair, NJ. "Once I get home from work, I remove my makeup and put a bag of frozen peas on my lids for about 5 minutes." The cold helps reduce swelling and pigmentation, a side effect of repeated irritation from her eczema. Unlike inflexible ice packs, a bag of peas easily conforms to the shape of the eyes for a faster effect.

Avoid Impact
"The repeated jarring of high-impact cardio like running can weaken collagen and lead to sagging," says Oakland, CA, dermatologist Katie Rodan, M.D. "So until a 'face bra' is invented, I'll stick to cycling and the elliptical machine:

Strike a Pose
Most derms will bend over backward for great skin. Hema Sundaram, M.D., a Washington, DC-area dermatologist, bends forward. Yoga moves "like Child's Pose, Downward-Facing Dog, and Sun Salutations improve circulation—the boost of oxygen is what gives skin that lovely yoga glow." Another reason to take to the mat: New research finds regular yoga practice may reduce the inflammation and stress that speed skin aging.

Lather With Care
"Mild cleansers are one of my best secrets," says Chicago derm Jonith Breadon, M.D. She's partial to CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser ($11; drugstores), which contains ceramides—fatty materials that help retain moisture.

Cut Back on the Sweet Stuff
The breakdown of sugars, called glycation, damages the collagen that keeps skin smooth and firm. To prevent this natural process from careening out of control, Naila Malik, M.D., a derm in Southlake, TX, sticks to low-glycemic carbs like whole grains; they're naturally low in sugar, and the body processes them slowly to limit the loss of collagen.

Pump Iron to Plump Skin
"I am religious about strength-training, and I always tell patients to do it more as they get older," says Patricia Farris, M.D., a dermatologist in Metairie, LA. The payoff: firmer skin from the neck down, the result of having better, more supportive muscle tone. "It's like adding volume to the face with fillers, except on your body," says Farris.

Skip Sodium
Diet soda is a vice that Audrey Kunin, M.D., a Kansas City, MO, dermatologist, just can't quit—she downs up to six cans a day. When she realized that all the sodium in soda (anywhere from 25 to 50 mg per can) made her eyes and jawline puffy, she switched to a brand that doesn't punish her skin: sodium-free Diet Rite soda. "It satisfies my cravings and my skin looks much better."

Tea Up
In her teens, Amy Wechsler, M.D., an NYC derm, started drinking green and black tea for the taste. Now she drinks three to five cups a day to safeguard her skin. Research suggests that both types of tea contain protective compounds—like EGCG and theaflavins—that help prevent skin cancers and the breakdown of collagen, the cause of wrinkles.

Setting priorities

As a parent, I want my kids to grow up as God-fearing and kind-hearted person. Second, I want them to have a secure future. In these trying times, working day and night won’t suffice to the growing needs of my kids. Even the combined salary of me and my husband sometimes fall short to the demands of the household. We prioritized their needs more than ours. Even my simple wants were shoved off indefinitely. I’m not ranting; it’s the bitter sweet reality of being a parent. Just last night, we were discussing of having bullion investment. It’s a great idea, isn’t it?

What’s true about you?

You Are Ambitious
You have your eye on the prize, and knowing you, it's probably a different prize every week.
You have a laser focus when it comes to achieving your goals, and you stay on task.

More than being a hard worker, you are a smart worker. You can always figure out a way to get what you want.
You don't just climb up the ladder - you skip steps. You break every rule that you can.

Are you a perfectionist?

You Are 29% Perfectionist
Occasionally you have perfectionist tendencies, but overall you're pretty normal.
You're sometimes hard on yourself, but you usually focus on what you're doing right!

King Midas

Have you ever wished you can be like King Midas? He is the king from Greek mythology who has the ability to turn everything he touched into gold. The “Golden touch” can turn a piece of wood into gold bar in no time. He become greedy and made his son turns to gold too.

Having the “Golden touch” I know is close to impossible but sometimes, I wish fairytales and fantasies become real even for a single day. I can pay off all our debts, whew! But reality bites. It won’t happen, ever. And so, we as individuals need to work our ass of hard to pursue our dream and to give our kids a better future.

no more a baby

Surreal it may sound but one year ago, I gave birth to a very tiny and fragile baby. And yesterday, my little darling just turned one. And this weekend, the husband and I planned to clean the house and renovate her room. We needed to scrape off the nursery decoration we have set up for her. No more girly stuff like flowers, fairies and starts. She’s not anymore a baby but a toddler. And soon, we know, she’d be into castles and princesses. Or she’d be into cartoon characters. Indeed, time flies so fast. Before I knew it, she’d be in preschool already.

2. What’s the story behind one of your scars?

Sleep. Shop. Relax.

4. What do you do when you're bored?

I know it isn’t a good thing but I eat when I’m bored.

Shop! No need to explain why, right?

6. What do you do when you're lonely?

Daydream. Surf the internet. Daydream more.

7. How do you measure the passing of time in life?

I don’t know.

A perfect lived day for me is a day when my kids don’t fight over a toy, they weren’t scolded by their father, and when the whole house is not noisy.

9. If you knew you were going to die in a year, what would you do in your final days?

Spend the days with my family especially my kids. I would want them to have happy memories with me.

Ninoy Aquino Day

ninoyEvery 21st of August, we commemorate the death of a hero, Ninoy Aquino. He was assasinated in the tarmac MIA, now known as NAIA. This is a public holiday here in our country. PGMA, our former president, used to move all holidays on its nearest Monday.

Originally, the 23rd of August is a holiday as it is the nearest Monday of the 21st. But PNoy’s decision to declare August 23rd as regular day made everyone else grieving except me. I am very, very grateful for his decision. It means a double pay Saturday for me. (My schedule is Tuesday to Saturday, that’s why.)

"The president is empowered under RA No. 9492 to modify holidays by law, order or proclamation," Lacierda said.

Oh, I’m so happy. Thanks PNoy!

Oprah

5ICR000Z Hi and welcome to Wednesday Wickedness. We are like other memes in that we will ask you ten questions each and every Wednesday. But our little "twist" is that each week we will pick a famous person and pick ten of their quotes. Each of our questions will be based on the quotes. Got it? Great! Let's begin this week's meme!

Today we picked Oprah Winfrey. Here's Wednesday Wickedness!

1. “I don't think you ever stop giving. I really don't. I think it's an on-going process. And it's not just about being able to write a check. It's being able to touch somebody's life.” What was the last thing that you did to help somebody’s life?

I lend my whole month salary to my brother who doesn’t have savings then so he can pay for the hospital bills of his girlfriend who gave birth.

2. “Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.” How long have you ever held your breath?

Eerr.. I haven’t tried it recently.

3. “As you become more clear about who you really are, you'll be better able to decide what is best for you - the first time around.” At what point do you think that you really decided who your were?

It was four years ago when I got pregnant out of wed lock and my parents cursed me.

4. “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” At what time of the year do you think you celebrate your life the most?

Every new year and every birthday of my kids.

5. “So go ahead. Fall down. The world looks different from the ground.” Are there times when you thought you had fallen down and learned something about yourself?

Yeah, a lot of times.

6. “Devote today to something so daring even you can’t believe you’re doing it.” What was the last thing you did where you thought that you could not believe in what you were doing?

Perform in public. I was so humiliated.

7. “Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.” Do you think that you must struggle to become strong?

Of course!

8. “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” Do you feel that life’s experiences always prepare you for what there is to come?

Yes, I totally agree on that.

9. “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” Can only a rich person feel this way? What do you think Oprah means by this?

It only means don’t stop yourself from doing the things you loved to do.

10. “I do not believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.” Do you believe in failure?

Yes I do believe in failure. It makes me a better person.

Thanks for checking out our Wednesday craziness. We hope you join us again. Please visit our other player's posts and make a comment. Join us next week for our next meme!

Shower of blessings

They say when it rains, it pours. I can attest to that. It has been two weeks now that we are “living in faith.” Our finances literally went zero in time when we need to pay for my son’s tuition fee and my daughter’s first birthday is in just a few days from now. But then again, we lift everything to the MAN above who knows our pains. My in-laws are vouching for the food and other party paraphernalia so we can celebrate my daughter’s birthday. And when we are almost giving up and holding to the last straw of hope we had, good news came pouring in, better than having bullion all together. Indeed, HE can only shower us with blessings upon blessings.

How is your inner child?

Your Inner Child Is Surprised
You see many things through the eyes of a child.
Meaning, you're rarely cynical or jaded.
You cherish all of the details in life.
Easily fascinated, you enjoy experiencing new things.

The cafe test

You Are Flexible
During your downtime, you like to find something new to experience and to inspire you.

You secretly wish that you could be a more successful person. Being rich is a dream of yours.

You get easily annoyed by the world and other people. You wish people would be more responsible and conscientious.

You are inspired by a mismatch of things. You never know what is going to get you thinking, and your mind tends to be racing.

A gift

My youngest is turning one in little less than a week now. As we have decided way, way back that we aren’t throwing a party for her, my SIL and BIL vouch to buy cake, spaghetti, ice cream and balloon for her. My SIL, my girl’s godmother, even bought a dress for her. Our life become easy as all we need to buy is a new sandals for her and we are all set to a simple celebration for her first birthday. The MAN above really provides most especially when we have nothing else but faith on him. I am now thinking of what to ask my Dad who is in Middle East for his birthday gift to my kid. For sure he can’t say no if I ask him to buy gold jewelry for his granddaughter.

1. How many of your friendships have lasted more than ten years? Which of your current friends do you feel will still be important to you ten years from now?

Only a few. My college buds will always be the most important friends I would ever had until the future, most especially Jhong.

2. When you look at yourself in the mirror, what’s the first thing you look at?

My face! How ugly I am. How unfortunate I am to have dry, skin. Bitter.

3. Who was the most recent person on your missed call list on your cell phone? What’s your relationship with the person?

My husband. Hahaha! I don’t answer calls even if he is the one calling if I am in a meeting.

4. What did your last text message you received on your cell phone say?

The husband and my first born already arrive in my in-laws place.

5. How would you “label” yourself?

What do you mean label? I am the most ordinary person you can meet but lives the most extraordinary life ever.

6. What was your favorite age that you’ve been?

I’d love to be the age where I am still a student and “money” isn’t a problem for you because it’s your parents’ problem. Haha!

7. What is your current desk top picture? What’s it significant?

I’m in the office right now so no desktop picture allowed here, for the 5s policy.

8. What was the last thing you said to someone that you‘d like to take back?

Uhm. I can’t barely remember it. Does that mean the husband and I didn’t fight this week? Hooray!

9. If you had to choose between a million bucks or to be able to go back in time and fix all your mistakes which would you choose?

I’d take the million bucks and fix my future rather than go back in time and fix my mess.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. What is your name

I found out this cool application in Facebook where they would check your name and finds an Angel name/Demon name for you. I know they don’t actually scan your name but gives you random answers but still, I find it amusing. Enough to give me a smile even for a few seconds.

Too much to ask for

sick_boy Is it too much to ask for a quite and peaceful weekend? I’ve been drained out this weekend. My youngest, who will turn one exactly 14 days from now, is coughing badly. My husband, on the other hand, is down with flu. Now tell me, how can I divide my attention to two sickies in the house. And if you think my eldest was cooperative, it’s a big NO. While I am attending to the needs of the two sickly, he turns to be the most demanding kid in town.

“Mom, don’t turn your back on me.”

“Mom, I want milk. Stop feeding Claire first.”

“Mom, let’s go here and there.”

Oh, for the love of God, my sanity was almost in the brick of disappearing. Goodness! I didn’t actually know what to do. My husband was moaning so badly because he can’t bear the headache he has. (It makes me irritated at times because I felt he was just acting.) The little girl is extra clingy. If I could only cut myself to three so I can tend to all their needs at the same time, I would. These were the times my temper is tested to its ream, and I’m almost about to explode anytime soon. I’m just holding and giving extra effort to extend whatever needs to be extended as in the end, I still have no one to hold on to except myself.

To think that was just it, NO. It’s just the tip of the iceberg. Having sickies in the house rattles me the most. Most especially during this time when our finances aren’t doing well. We still have tons of fees due right now. Tuition fees, debts, and others. Holy cow! Where in the world will I get the money we need? If I could only disappear and float in the air, I would. I just want to have peace of mind even for a single day.
