What fairy tale are you?

You Are the Little Mermaid
You find it hard to be satisfied with the life you were given. You feel like there is something bigger out there.
You know what you want, even if you don't go for it right away. You tend to long for people and things.

You are a true romantic and idealist. You get lovesick easily, and you've had your fair share of heartbreak.
Even so, you would give up a lot for love. Love is the most important thing in your life.

Will you do it?

Have you ever seen the movie John Q? I am very, very touched with the story where John after learning that his insurance doesn’t cover the medical expenses of his son who is currently in the hospital, did every single thing he could just to make sure his son would have an immediate heart transplant. He almost sold all their furniture, asked help from their co-church members. But the money he raised didn’t suffice and what he did was to hostage his son’s surgeon inside the emergency room. Oh, you better watch that movie. A few claimed it’s a real story, other’s says not. After seeing that movie, I realized that it is indeed very important to have a Term Life Insurance for yourself and for your family. Every single person should Buy Life Insurance. Good thing NoMedExamLifeInsurance.com offers term life insurance without the medical examination and without the endless paperwork. Of course, it’ll be easy for everyone to get Life Insurance No Exam. Filling out of endless papers is a hassle, I tell you. Good news is that it doesn’t matter where in the country the person lives, they can quote one’s life insurance for free within a matter of minutes. All you have to do is call the toll free number 1-800-939-0710 to get a quote from them.

No harm in dreaming

I am swamped with tons and tons of work. When will this end? I honestly really, really wanted to be out of this slavery – corporate slavery, that is. I simply wanted to be a SAHM (stay-at-home mother) and watch my growing kids. But then, it isn’t practical as we have payables left and right. I wished we could afford to buy gold bullion now. We would wait for the right time when its price is sky rocket high and we would surely sell them. We would then put up a business using the money we have raised. Surely, we could finally afford by then for me not to work anymore. Oh life, dream on.

A very bad news

Our Human Resource manager called for a meeting yesterday and attendance is a must for all employees with PTT as their tax code. They announced a very, very bad news from our BIR. I’ll tell the story soon.

After the meeting, almost all employees are whining. Some even cried, including myself. No, we won’t be losing our job. The announcement has a major impact on our earnings for the coming year. I immediately called the husband to relay the news to him. We even called lawyers and certified public accountants with tax specialty to discuss the matter with them. The husband and I have to earn more next year, which made me think of putting up on online business. I am thinking of selling clothes for babies and kids. Baby clothing would surely be a hit to mothers most especially if I would sell imported brands in a cheaper cost. It could either be pre-order or on-hand. I am already drafting a proposal to the husband and if he allows me to venture on to this business, I will go full blast first quarter of next year. Hopefully, the income the business will generate can help or more so, suffice our needs.

Congrats to V + J

I just heard that our colleague V’s wife J gave birth to a bouncing baby boy last Monday. When I was still in night shift, I heard the news that J was already in labor before the Halloween. We were even joking V that his baby might feel coming out either on Halloween or on All Saint’s day. It didn’t progress though and when her OB checked her last Monday, her water is almost drained so they have no choice but to perform an emergency Caesarian Section on her. No matter how expensive the operation is, V agreed. Besides, they waited for the baby for more than five years. We haven’t visited them but we heard they are already discharged from the hospital. I have to drop by the mall first and buy a present for the baby, cute boys clothes will do, I hope so. Or should I ask V instead? He might need tons and tons of diapers or even formula milk, if J does not breastfeed their baby. Ah, I miss having a baby around the house. I miss its smell. I miss the cry. But no, I don’t want to have a baby anymore. Two is enough for me.

Baby clothes = memories

I was in the mood to clean our room last weekend and that includes my kids’ closet. After the whole sorting of which has to go and which has to stay, I was shocked to see that I was able to full a box up to its brim. Oh wow! I didn’t know my kids were able to accumulate tons of clothes in the past years. Most of them were gifts from friends and family members during their birthdays and Christmas seasons. Those clothes will either be given to charity or to my younger cousins based in the province. It was hard to let go those baby clothes my kids’ wear when they were still babies. However, their closet is not that big enough to house them anymore so I have no choice but to give it away. Although I am a little sad about letting those go, that only means I have enough reason to shop for them again. Weeh! I am sure the husband wouldn’t whine with the idea most especially when almost all malls in the metro are having sale. Actually, he only allows me to shop whenever there is a sale. As he says, I am uncontrollable when it comes to shopping.

Feeling guilty

I did something three days ago. It keeps on haunting me. And no matter how I make justifications on what I did, I still can’t help but feel guilty about it. No one can pacify me. I keep on reminding myself that what I did was right. Read more here.

What color is your personality?

You Are Blue
You are detail oriented and focused. You enjoy keeping your life in order.
You are a perfectionist, and you tend to take your time with tasks. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

It's hard for you to deal with dramatic, flippant, and silly people. You value maturity.
You are a good listener and you expect others to be the same. You expect to be taken seriously.

I wanna be a billionaire

I wanna be a billionaire, so freakin' bad
Buy all the things I never had

Who wouldn't want to be one? I believe many has dream of such, but most never become a reality. Anyway, it's next to impossible. Or, it would take you a lifetime to be one. Unless they have a lucky charm that would make them a millionaire in a blink of an eye by winning the Mega Lotto with 300 million pesos price in stake. With such amount of money, they would be able to buy as much as gold coins they want at the US Gold Bureau.

The meme about Me, Myself and I

Welcome back to Sunday Stealing. Sunday Stealing originated on WTIT: The Blog authored by Bud Weiser. Here we will steal all types of memes from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent memes. You may have heard of the expression, “honor amongst thieves”. In that age-old tradition, we also have our rules. First, we always credit the blog that we stole it from and we will “fess up” to the blog owner where we stole the meme. We also provide a link to the victim's post. (It's our way of saying "Thanks!") We do sometimes edit the original meme, usually to make it more relevant to our global players, to challenge our players, sometimes to select that meme's best questions, or simply to make it less repetitive from either this new meme or recently asked questions from a prior featured meme. Let's go

1 Today we ripped this meme off a blogger named Lucy at the blog The Smallest Smallholding. She states that she was tagged by her friend Amy at the blog Turn to the Music. But, it was probably stolen there as well. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Hootin’Anni Style

Welcome to the October 21st edition of Thursday Thunks!
(which we always seem to post on Wednesday)
Where we make you think a little bit before you blog!
We pick a subject, and your job is to interpret it anyway you want.
Write about it on your blog... simple as that.
Maybe you can interpret it as a picture - we don't care!
Please only leave a link if you have written a Thursday Thunks post.
Don't forget to go visit the other participants' blogs.
Read and comment about all their Thursday Thunks responses!
That's what all this is about after all, isn't it?
We'll have so much fun and become lifelong friends....

Today's questions are brought to you by the color purple, witches' brooms, the number 800-555-1000, and hootin' anni.

1] We all love snuggly things, right? In your own words, explain how the "X" and "O" became symbols for kisses and hugs!

X symbolizes the way your arms are crossed at the back of the person you hug. O symbolizes the pout of your lips when you try to kiss a person. Does that make sense?

2] Besides eliminating sticks, what would you put in a non-stick pan?

I’d try grilled cheese.

3] x=y over pi squared. What are your thoughts on crematoriums having discounts on those that die in fires?

Thanks but no thanks.

4] Tongue twisters are fun...but, it's torture to try to say lisp with that "s" in the word. What is your favorite tongue twister? Risque answers get extra credit!

I grew up with the Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers..

5] Cold weather is coming up. If it's zero degrees Fahrenheit, and tomorrow night it's predicted to be twice as cold, what temperature will it be?

A negative two degress Fahrenheit, if my math is correct, LOL!

6] Your significant other is upset with you, would you rather be skating on thin ice or be in hot water? Why?

Skating in thin ice because feeling cold makes me feel less stress than having something hot near me.

7] What's worse, expecting the unexpected or being a wise guy?

Being a wise guy because all eyes are up you and people won’t forget even the single, most simple mistake you’ll do.

8] What brand of vacuum cleaner sucks the best? Mine really sucks!!!

No idea.

9] How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? Do you like playing with fire?

Hmmm… I don’t play with fire.

10] Toys R us...what was your favorite toy?

During my younger years, I’d die for a Barbie.

11] Halloween is near...let's go grave robbing....what would you like to find?

Gold or diamond that can suffice to pay all my debts, LOL!

12] Do you wake up or open your eyes first?

I am not actually aware if I wake up first or open my eyes first. I’ll try it later and be conscious about it.

13] What mask would you wear to a Halloween Party?

Nothing. I don’t attend Halloween party or should I say nobody invites me.

Have a great day. See you next Thursday.

Barangay and SK Elections

Today, I mean yesterday was the country’s Barangay and SK elections. We went back to the same old banana of voting manually. The husband accompanied his sister who was a lawyer in supervising one precinct in another barangay. I just learned that up until now, they are still there waiting for the result of the election.

No sleep for 48 hours

I did it. I had been awake for straight 48 hours even if I force myself to sleep. Here’s what happened. Last Friday night, my boss advised me that I can go work at home on Saturday night as our company hired Houston pest control to do our twice a month pest control. Saturday morning, I went to Greenhills together with the husband and his cousin. Never did I thought that we would end up until evening there. We arrived at home around 7pm. Should I need to report to the office, I would have end up sleeping in my area. I was seriously dead tired, I tried to sleep for an hour.

I’m so proud

1 Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: I'm So Proud

1. What are you proud of?

Proud to be who I am – what I was and what I have become.

2. What is the best thing you’ve ever won as a prize? How did you win it?

In my entire existence, I have never won a contest excluding small raffle during parties.

3. Tell us about something you've done that in retrospect was a waste of time.

I’d say it’ll be investing so much of my emotions to my past relationships that when it ended, I don’t have anything left for me.

4. How old were you when life changed the most for you? How did it change?

I was 23 then, I got pregnant out of wedlock. Until now, we still aren’t married but I’m happy to say that I made the right decision not to abort the baby then.

5. Tell us about a place you that you've been that you considered to be very tranquil.

I felt unattached to the world when I visit my mom’s hometown, most especially when I am alone in the rice fields enjoying the view of the mountains.

6. Who is your favorite news anchor/reporter? Why?

I don’t have any.

7. If you were to have the opportunity to name a new town or city, what would you call it? Why?

My own name! At least, when I am already dead, they’d still remember me because of it.

8. What is something about which you've always wondered but have not yet found a good answer?

Why do life is unfair? None can answer that, I suppose.

9. When you can't go to sleep, what is your personal remedy to help yourself drift into Lullabyland?

When I was still young, I have this habit of playing with my belly button to make me sleepy. Thankfully, I didn’t do it now.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

What color cell phone are you?

You Are a Black Cell Phone
You are powerful, assertive, and a real go getter. You never have any problem getting what you want.
You value success, and part of that success means having the latest and greatest things.

You tend to be the first in line for the newest cell phone. You like to have as many features as possible.
You know that things don't make people happy... but they sure make life more fun!

Santa’s gift

My parents didn’t believe in Santa Claus, so I grew up not knowing him. Still, if he was real, what would your wish be? What do you want to receive from him? Investment wise, a gold coin or gold bullion would be ideal to ask for him. For sure, he doesn’t need to visit the Unites States Gold Bureau to have one. My dream cam and my dream bag would be a nice gift too, if it isn’t too much to ask. As a mother, I’d love to have small gifts for the kids as they would surely love to get more than one gift on Christmas day. Sadly though, he isn’t for real so all our wishes would remain wishes if we don’t do actions.

Just the way you are

Just the way you are
Bruno Mars

Oh her eyes, her eyes
Make the stars look like they're not shining
Her hair, her hair
Falls perfectly without her trying

She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day

Yeah I know, I know
When I compliment her
She wont believe me
And its so, its so
Sad to think she don't see what I see

But every time she asks me do I look okay
I say

When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are

Her nails, her nails
I could kiss them all day if she'd let me
Her laugh, her laugh
She hates but I think its so sexy

She's so beautiful
And I tell her every day

Oh you know, you know, you know
Id never ask you to change
If perfect is what you're searching for
Then just stay the same

So don't even bother asking
If you look okay
You know I say

When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are

The way you are
The way you are
Girl you're amazing
Just the way you are

When I see your face
There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for awhile
Cause girl you're amazing
Just the way you are

What else is new?

It’s Friday night!

And when everyone else in this side of the world is either partying or in deep slumber, here I am at work starting my eight hour shift. I know I shouldn’t rant as only few are lucky enough to find a decent job I have but I can’t help it. I am not a night person. There is one good side though of being a night shift, and that is I can simply do my tasks without thinking if someone else is peeking my monitor. And I can take a break and research about gold coins every now and then.

So, what else is new?

Friday Fill-in #196

1

So...here we go!

1. One of my strongest beliefs is God exists.

2. Many mistakenly think I am pregnant as my belly is huge!

3. The sky is cloudy with a threat of rain and wind and cold, so it would be nice to just chill inside the bedroom and play with the kids.

4. Knowing someone still believes in me is comforting to me.

5. I always thought I'd be a sore loser.

6. When I daydream, I always stare at the stars and then I went outside to look at the full moon.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to what else but going back to work, tomorrow my plans include visiting my son’s pedia dentist and Sunday, I want to seriously review for my certification exam!

The Best of the Correspondents airs tonight (October 19) after Bandila on ABS-CBN.

From PEP

My first experience

1 I never tried to use my company provided health card even just for a simple check-up. Besides, our doctors (pedia and OB) are family friends. I got pregnant but didn’t use it either. I knew that the doctor won’t treat us well if we use the card.

Last Saturday we were out for lunch when the husband felt severe pain on his third molar. He said it was too painful and wanted to have it extracted immediately. And so, we scouted for a dental clinic near the area. After the agony of having the tooth extracted, which didn’t happen on the spot, we went home. I took a mental note, upon seeing the healthcard’s logo on the door, to inquire about their services for us. The next day, I called them up to inquire and we ended up having a schedule Monday afternoon for a prophylaxis for both my son and I.

On the day itself, the just cleaned my son’s teeth manually claiming that he still can’t bear the machine-type of cleaning as he was still young. They even claim that there is no need to have his cavity filled which was opposed to the pedia-dentist we first see at the early part of this year. When it was my turn, the dentist cleaned my teeth well but was shocked when she was announced it was done. She only cleaned my front teeth leaving my molars uncleaned.

Is that the way they handle health card holders? I will ask our coordinators in our office if that’s really the way they handle us.

Christmas is around the corner

Christmas is around the corner and I can see my wish list is starting to get long. However, this season won’t be merry for us as we are cost cutting, we still have tons of bills to pay and I am targeting to be debt free by next year. And so, no more gold coins for me. I’d have to keep myself contented reading about United States Gold Bureau online and wish that by next year, we’d be able to be financially free to buy what we want and not just those we dire need. I am not bitter. I just learned to accept the fact of life.

Answer to my facial skin problem

aveeno I have a very problematic facial skin. And I have been trying almost all skin care products in the market – from Ponds to Olay to Eskinol to Belo but still nothing works for me. I stumbled from a forum and read something about this beauty bar soap (Aveeno Clear Complexion Cleansing Bar) who many raves about. Although this product is imported, I am lucky enough to see it at Shopwise when my son and I went there to buy milk for my daughter. For almost $4, I think it was a steal. I am now trying it and so far my skin reacts to it well.

Oh no!

The dear husband has been complaining that his tooth aches. And so, we took time to visit a dentist. The dentist confirmed that there was something wrong with his third molar (wisdom tooth). They performed prophylaxis first then had his tooth x-rayed to check the alignment of the tooth. He was given medicines to take for a week. After which, if the pain still occurs, they have no choice but to extract it. He asked how much would that cost. I can’t believe it when they told us that the cost could get as high as $200 depending on how easy or hard the tooth gets extracted. More than buying single bullion, right?

SM Scholars Grand Alumni Homecoming

SMHome Our future depends on what we know and learn today.

SM Foundation Inc. has been a part of my college life, and I owe them big time. If not for them, I wouldn’t have a degree in Computer Engineering now. It’s a prestige to be part of the SM Scholars Alumni.

Tomorrow, the 17th of October, the 2nd Grand Alumni Homecoming will be held. I was unable to attend the first one, so I make sure I can make it here. It’ll be fun seeing my co-scholars who were my professors too in college and also my college friends who I haven’t seen for the longest time now. See you!

No to techie stuff

Okay, I am still ecstatic to own a brand new cellular phone courtesy of the husband. Over and over, I was thinking the reason why he bought one. If you knew my husband, he isn’t the type of person who gives gifts even if there’s a reason, such as birthdays, anniversaries or even Christmas. He would rather buy bullion as he thinks it’s a good investment (which I agree) rather than those techie stuffs in the market (which I don’t agree). Well, I guess I don’t need any acting workshops anymore as he bought the idea of giving me one, LOL!

8. What was the last song that you sang in the shower?

Woot! Woot!

Indeed, the MAN above answers prayers in many ways – mysterious ways that no one can ever predict. Just yesterday, I receive my daily God Whispers Today message which I posted here. It says HE wants me to have money.

I know, I’m getting materialistic these days. Who wouldn’t? Bills are piling up, memo from school arriving almost everyday reminding you to pay this and that. I am literally drowned with payables in my hand.

2I opened my mail today and receive a wonderful greeting.

Take a peek! Aside from that, my boss just gave us a good news. The increase that we (my colleague and I) have been waiting for since the first quarter of this year has finally been approved. Although the company wouldn’t give us the retro pay, they have increased us more than we asked.

Isn’t that a great news?

Thank you Ama! Thank you! Thank you!

Mystery shampoo

P9250033 It was mid-July when Daphne and Chuvaness started to talk about this certain Mystery Shampoo on their blogs. Of course, at the instant of seeing the bottles, I already knew what it was. I joined the bandwagon and sign up for a free kit – shampoo and conditioner.

By August, the shampoo was revealed. Indeed, it was Pantene. Days have past and I honestly forgot about the free kit I was suppose to receive. I just have a surprise of my life last week when the package arrived. I didn’t expect it at all.

Thanks P&G!

The red bus

IMG_7063

Stay tune for my story regarding this bus which we rode during my son’s field trip last 25th of this month.

Psst

I’m still here. Yes, you hear me right. I just had been so overly stressed out this past few days, thanks my son’s consecutive activities in school. I do have tons of stories to share; however, I still have a lot of tasks on my hands. I have to juggle being a corporate slave during the night (I’m on night shift) at being a mother during the day. I almost forgot I also have a husband who needs my attention too. Wondering now, what shall I do if my daughter will go to one of the cosmetology schools in Wichita? Can I still live up to my kids’ expectations?

In a few minutes

Time check! Three in the morning.

Yes, I am up as early as it is. Today is my son’s field trip. Excited much? No.

I have to drag myself up on the bed as I don’t have anyone who’d help me prepare everything we need from our lunch to our clothes to our bags. In a couple of hours, I have to wake up the little boy to feed him breakfast and to take him a bath.

I know I shouldn’t be online now but I can’t help it.

My sister-in-law

My husband and I, together with my sister-in-law, were supposed to meet tomorrow for a dinner. However, my husband just recently receives a call from his sister that she won’t be able to come tomorrow. She just had meeting with her new two clients who seek help from her regarding her Trasylol lawsuit and Accutane Lawsuit, respectively. They were still not finish with their meeting today and scheduled the next meeting tomorrow. In return, she has to cancel our dinner. Who are we not to understand her situation? Thanks to my husband’s procrastination, we still do not have a reservation to any restaurant in the metro. We are now thinking whether to push through with our plan or not.

Bubble thought

"Me? I’m scared of everything. I’m scared of what I saw, I’m scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I’m with you."

Fighting big C

My mom and aunt’s former employer (they were maids before) died recently because of the dreaded big C – CANCER.

Her sister wrote an article based on their experiences on what and what not to eat when one has such disease.

The article is originally posted here.

Food and the fight against the Big C
By AMY A. UY

Before I proceed, I’d like to make it clear that I am not a nutritionist, a dietitian, or a doctor. But as it happens, cancer has struck our family twice in the last three years without warning. And as I’ve learned, when your loved one has cancer, you throw yourself into the business of coping with the pain while reading up a lot, looking for answers, talking to a lot of doctors, and trying to find a magical cure that will make this dreaded disease go away.

What I’ve also learned is that when people find out that you’re caring for a person with cancer, they’re always ready to dispense advice. Most of what they share is based on experience or what they’ve learned and heard, like a friend of a friend of a friend who got cured after taking a potion of this or that, the juice of an exotic fruit or a herbal concoction of sorts.

These are all welcome advice and comforting words. For a moment, you see a flicker of hope and just maybe, there’s a magical cure out there that worked for them and it, too, might work for your brother, sister, husband, wife, or child who is fighting to stay alive. And when your loved one’s life hangs in the balance, believe me, you will try them all.

As for us, we’ve tried all sorts of advice, from eating guyabanos, to drinking mango-carrot-apple juice, mangosteen juice and kangen or alkaline water, to eating papayas and melons and lots of broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. The only thing we haven’t tried is, perhaps, to eat one raw onion everyday.

However, the most important thing that a person caring for a cancer patient needs to learn is how to cook especially for them. What struck me was what a doctor told my sister when she asked about her diet. He said, “Just don’t feed the cancer." This means, do not feed the cancer cells something that would allow them to multiply and take over your body. foodfightscMeal-planning on the part of the designated caregiver in the family easily becomes a daily obsession that is often riddled with a lot of confusion especially when you get conflicting advice from different doctors. Naturopathic doctors will give you basically a no-meat meal plan with lots of herbal supplements to detoxify the body whereas, medical doctors often advise patients undergoing chemotherapy to go on an all-you-can-eat diet along with several glasses of high-calorie nutritional supplements to make them “strong" enough to battle the effects of the treatment.

Depending on what type of cancer hits your family, the one in charge of the meals should work hand in hand with a licensed nutritionist and read up on what must be avoided and should be generously eaten. My husband had kidney cancer and to keep his other kidney well, a dietitian advised him to limit his intake of red meat and all proteins including poultry, eggs and even fish. He also steered clear of some protein-rich vegetables like beans, nuts and soy while also following a strict low-salt diet.

Eating out is difficult as the choices are rather limited. Going fresh and cooking your own food becomes key. And for cancer patients, survival depends on one thing: good nutrition.

You have to be sure they are getting the right nutrients and none of the harmful additives in processed food. You have to read nutritional labels thoroughly and be wary of what’s in your pack of instant soup, ready-mix sauces or even juice drinks.

While the nutritional needs of one patient are different from another and as diets of cancer patients may also be vastly dissimilar to the usual healthy diets, there are a few practical things that may be changed in the way food is prepared for a sick loved one. At the very least, these might help everyone to stay on the path of wellness.

broth Start making your own broths.

Homemade broths are good for making vegetable soups (cauliflower, squash, potato and carrot) and even a comforting bowl of arroz caldo. But instead of throwing in an MSG-loaded chicken cube in hot water, save the wing tips, necks and backs of your whole chickens and simply boil them with some carrots, leeks and onions, a bay leaf with some herbs and whole black pepper. I made variations of pumpkin soup, carrot-potato soup, potato leek soup, creamy corn soup, cauliflower soup and a whole lot of other comforting broths which helped my sister when she had trouble swallowing solid foods. Also, chilled soups with almost no salt work best for those suffering from severe mouth sores.

herbs Cook with a lot of herbs and spices – instead of salt.

A low-salt diet is recommended for most patients unless they become dehydrated due to chemotherapy and in which case they need to load up on sodium. But for those on salt restrictions, eating doesn’t mean living on bland, tasteless food. Using herbs and spices in dishes in place of a sprinkling of salt brings food to a whole new level of goodness. Unless your loved one is sensitive to spicy food, paprika may be added to dishes for added flavor.

broccoli Learn creative ways to cook broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.

A number of websites on special diets for cancer patients tell us that there are certain foods that slow down the growth of cancer cells. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage belong to that elite list. Unless your loved one is suffering from nausea due to therapy, incorporate them in dishes and have a meal plan with huge servings of these vegetables. Cabbage can go into pochero, nilaga, macaroni soup and chicken sopas. It is also good sauteed with just garlic and onions or flavored with a little oyster sauce. Meanwhile, you can just steam broccoli florets and toss with some minced garlic, butter and a bit of lemon juice or enjoy them in stir-fries with some cubed chicken breasts or tofu.

tea Brew green tea or herbal teas (like lemongrass or tanglad) to replace sodas and juice drinks.

Sodas and juice drinks are loaded with sugar which is said to be cancer’s best friend. As a substitute, you can easily boil a few tanglad stems and add a little muscovado for sweetness. Chill the brew if you wish and put in some lemon slices for a refreshing drink your loved one can enjoy all day. Catechin-rich green tea has also been widely acknowledged as a tonic that helps prevent the development of cancer. However, soda might be suggested by the doctor when the patient suffers from nausea, vomiting or weight loss.

lolascooking Go back to your lola’s way of cooking.

While it may be convenient to just buy a pack of ready-mix sauce for some fast and easy adobo, mechado, pancit palabok, or even sinigang, it may be better to start ridding your pantries of processed mixes. Learn to cook sinigang the way your grandma used to, which is to boil a few pieces of tamarind and strain out the juice, instead of using a sinigang mix. Learn to make marinara sauce and your own pasta sauces to be sure dishes are free of preservatives.

sweets Clear kitchen counters of tempting sugary sweets.

As mentioned, you don’t want to feed cancer cells and sugar is what they crave the most. A harmless-looking donut could be deadly – it’s all sugar and transfats. Know how to make sugar-free sweets with muscovado, which is unrefined sugar, or an organic natural sweetener. If you must indulge in desserts, go for those offered by vegan bakers like Meeta Nandan of Heart2Hearth who bakes non-dairy, nut-free, and eggless treats and uses organic ingredients.

fruits Load up on fruits and veggies.

Just like mom used to say, spinach, beans and greens are good for you. A diet that is mostly plant-based is recommended. Fruits and veggies are best consumed raw or juiced. However, there are also vegetables that should be avoided in certain cases. Some doctors also tell chemo patients not to consume raw food, fruits and vegetables as they are likely to attack a suppressed immune system. One must also try to buy organic pesticide-free vegetables so do find good sources of these.

Read up and learn from the experts.

It is important to know that not all cancer patients need the same diet plans and caregivers must adjust the diets when the patient or their loved one suffers from different side effects during treatment, ranging from body weakness, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, mouth sores, and loss of appetite. It can be very frustrating when the patient’s sense of taste changes due to therapy and he or she would reject the food you lovingly prepared. But take heart as your loved one is not his/her usual self and maybe in a lot of discomfort or pain.

When your loved one is undergoing treatment, always consult a licensed nutritionist to draw up a meal plan or check out websites that offer thorough information about cancer patients’ nutritional needs. One good source of information is the National Cancer Institute website, www.cancer.gov, which lists food options that address different side effects. nationalcancerinstituteMeanwhile, prevention is still the key to fighting the Big C. Take note of these generally well-known cancer-fighting foods which are common in most cancer prevention websites and see how you can include more of them in your family’s daily diet:

  • Beans
  • Berries (raspberries, strawberries and blueberries)
  • Cruciferous Vegetables (Cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and kale)
  • Dark Leafy Green Vegetables (Lettuce, mustard greens, Swiss chard)
  • Flaxseed
  • Garlic (also onions, chives, scallions, and leeks)
  • Green Tea (decaf)
  • Tomatoes
  • Whole grains

One of the best ways to show your loved one that you care is by preparing their food. And for those who have cancer, I do believe this is one way they would know for sure that you are there for them -- ready, willing and able to help them fight the biggest battle of their life.

The 24th of the month

Whew! Never did I think that a simple field demo of my eldest would be tiring. We woke up early just to be in school at eight in the morning. We were in full force, me, my husband, my mom and my youngest. Armed with a video camera and a DSLR, we’re all set to capture one of his milestones in school. Of course, I am one proud mama seeing him dance his booty. They performed in tune of I’ve Got a Feeling by Black Eyed Peas twice. After the program, we head off to the ever famous Jollibee to grab a bite. It was also our simple treat for my mom who is celebrating his birthday today. On our way home, the two kids fell asleep. By the time I was able to check my mail, I saw I had to research about gold bullion. My boss seemed to get fascinated with all the things glittery and gold nowadays.

Thursday Thunks: What's in a Name?

1 The TT questions are brought to you by Bud, the color of Kimber's hair (where did she go?) and the number 333.

1. We are changing your name. You have no choice. You get to pick it, but we must approve it. You must have a good reason. Ok, what is the name and reason?

Alex. I would have loved to have a guy name for a change.

2. I say Shotgun, you say?

Wedding.

3. We are sending you away. Africa or Mexico?

Africa.

4. When you're home alone, do you still close the door when you use the restroom?

Of course! Even if the main door is locked.

5.  Berleen told me that I have to ask a mean question. Tell us about a horrible memory.

I prefer to keep it myself.

6. What are your plans for October?

Study hard and stay focus. November 6 is just a stone throw away. It’s a make or break part of my career.

7. Is there anyone that you regret ever meeting?

My ex-boyfriends. Two of them!

8. You have 3 months left to live, what do you do?

Fulfill my childhood dreams. Go to the happiest place on earth. Travel. Dine out. Be merry and free.

9. You wake up in an unfamiliar place, what is your first reaction?

Where the hell am I?!

10. Your phone rings at 4am, just before you kill this person, who do you expect it would be?

It should be an emergency call – that I need to report to the office to assist the newbies to restore our network, LOL!

11. You're having a bad day, what one thing can make your day better?

Hugs and kisses from the kids and chocolates / blueberry cheesecake..

12. You are doing a meme written by the blogosphere's shadiest character. Is there anything else that you should be doing right now?

Yeah, make my turn over report for my boss.

13. If money were not a problem, (and it never is, right? Yes, I stole this f$%*ing question. Sue me.) where would you like to live?

Paris! Or somewhere in Europe.
